Somehow the Buildings Fill Up

they're complaining about rent in New York City again
stress-smoking cigarettes
staring woefully up at the high rises
somehow the buildings fill up.
they're thinking of moving back to Jersey
smelling roses, planting tomatoes,
price-matching washing machines
Nino from the Wash and Fold might
have to appreciate someone else's business.
"it's the job market right now,"
Ric from Operations mutters under his breath,
deftly giftwrapping rolexes
with the speed and precision of an army trained sniper
somehow the boutiques fill up.
as we slowly discover
the lives we envisioned for ourselves
might cost too much
a line forms outside the door
for others to live it for us.
